About Us

The story so far... and our vision for the future!

Nayamba Primary School was established on Nagwaza Farm in the Chisamba district of Zambia by the farm owners. It was established to educate the children of the families working on all the surrounding farms because there was no primary school close enough or affordable. This wonderful free school has attracted many children from the surrounding area. The number of children attending daily now exceeds 290.

The school initially consisted of 3 classrooms and one small office. The school was having to offer half day timetables in order to provide education for grades 1-7. It now consists of 9 classrooms, a preschool, kitchen, staff room and a library space. We have also built accommodation for all teaching staff so they are able to live on site. (Given it's rural location, there were no local accommodation options.) We have a caretaker, who maintains the grounds and buildings, and a cook, who provides a hot enriched porridge for every pupil each day. We have also built a playground, football pitch and netball court for the children to enjoy. The school follows the Zambian curriculum and pupils of each grade can now have their own classroom and teacher each day.

Our Vision

We believe that education can transform whole communities, and that is why we want Nayamba School to be able to provide an outstanding free education to any child in the community who wishes to attend. Nayamba School is already becoming the hub of the community, with the church using the building at weekends and the new library, but this is just the beginning. Alongside the children's education we want to run adult literacy and numeracy evening classes as well as workshops that tackle health and social issues that the families face. We also hope to provide a first class secondary education in the future and in 2017 we have been able to add Grade 8 to our school provision. We will also be establishing a social enterprise business whose profits will go into helping the school cover its ongoing running costs. This business will also provide essential apprenticeship opportunities for young adults.

In order for us to move towards this vision our first step was to improve the infrastructure of the primary school. For the learners to be given the best possible education they needed to be able to have their own classroom for their grade for a complete day. To this end, in 2016 we fundraised for 4 more classrooms and a preschool class, as well as 5 additional teachers houses and an ablutions block. This ensured we had a primary school that was 100% complete. We now need regular donors who would be willing to commit to supporting our teacher salary commitments as without our fabulous teachers the building works are worthless. We also value our food programme which ensures pupils basic nutritional needs are met; it also encourages pupils to attend regularly and pupils are more focussed to learn when they are not hungry. Nayamba Friends

Because Nayamba School is such an amazing place, and because our 100% model ensures that your money goes directly towards making a difference, we have a growing number of friends and partners who are as passionate about the project as we are. We are particularly excited about partnering with The Estelle Trust. They have helped fund considerable infrastructure works and, through their 'in country' staff can support with teacher development as well.

But we are always looking for new ones - charities, trusts, companies and individuals! If you would like to become one of our friends why not find us on Facebook and contact us to join our email list so you are always kept up to date on what is happening.

Nayamba Projects

So far we have helped the school through many projects, including classroom renovations and building new classrooms, building teachers' homes, providing solar lighting, connecting the school to mains electricity, drilling a borehole for a viable water supply and creating outdoor play spaces for the children to enjoy.

Nayamba Visits

Since 2012 we have sent regular teams to the school to make a difference. Not only have they delivered resources and communications from our sponsors, they have also enriched the school by providing teacher training and enthusiasm!

Volunteers fully fund their own trip and also cover the expenses of the resources needed to make the trip a success. One feature of every trip is bringing new reading books for the children and the highlight for all our volunteers is simply being able to spend time sitting with the children, reading to them and helping them to read to you.
