We now have six apprentices and a full-time sewing tutor at the school’s trade centre. After learning basic weaving techniques from an intensive session led by the Cotton Association tutor, we were able to recruit Josephine, a wonderful weaver who has been seconded to help us learn intermediary skills, including how to use a more complex loom. The apprentices have also been working successfully with the sewing teacher, who is guiding them through the process of turning their woven, printed fabrics into saleable items, for example: tote bags. There has been a good deal of interest for the tote bags from Zambian retail outlets but the apprentices will wait until they have gained their level one competency before starting to sell the products (hopefully by the end of the year).
